Failed to create sample data – SharePoint 2010 Beta

In a previous post, I explained the order in which you need to install the bits for Team Foundation Server 2010 and Visual Studio  Beta 2.  I wanted to create that development environment so I could start using SharePoint 2010 Beta.   I have recently completed setting up SharePoint 2010 Beta  and the complete  installation includes:

  • Windows 7 Ultimate x64
  • Team Foundation Server 2010 Beta 2
  • Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2
  • SharePoint 2010 Beta (requires x64)

I used the SharePoint installation guide from MSDN and it went pretty smoothly with one exception.  I ran into an error that has been reported on many blogs and forums.  The SharePoint products configuration wizard, which is run after the SharePoint Server 2010 Server installer, failed on step 8 (or 9 for some others) while trying to create sample data.  Many posts talk about the WCF Nonhttp Activation and WCF HTTP Activation windows components not being installed, but those were indeed installed in my environment:

I found the following post on the Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog that seemed worth a try: http://tinyurl.com/yjy4yku.

After downloading and installing that ‘update’ and restarting Windows, the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard completed without errors and automatically launched my new SharePoint template selection page in the browser:

That should get those of you with the same problem as me off to the races!

Getting started with Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server 2010 Beta 2

Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 has been available for around a month.  Knowing that it may be used in a ‘go live’ capacity, I decided it was time to get familiar with it so I could start using it on new projects.  When I sat down to get started I realized that I had no idea what bits to install or in what order, so I did some looking and found a detailed video post on what one needs to do to get started with Visual Studio 2010 and Team Foundation Server.  My summary is the super abridged version of this 20 minute video on Channel 9 by Brian Keller.

When finished, you will have a VPC with SQL Server 2008, TFS 2010 Beta 2 and VS 2010 Beta 2, ready to use for online labs, tutorials or new projects.

I went with a VPC install and set up the following bits in the following order:

  • Windows 7 Ultimate
    • IIS
    • Windows Authentication
    • Application Development
    • Anti-Virus Software (I like AVG Free)
  • SQL Server 2008
    • Use the  administrator account to run SQL Services
    • Change SQL Server Agent to Automatic Startup Type
    • Accept all other defaults
    • Service Pack 1 (required for Windows 7 )
  • Team Foundation Server 2010
    • Run Installer
    • Run Configuration Wizard for  Team Foundation Application Server
      • use the advanced option to get the most features
    • Run Configuration Wizard for Team Foundation Build Server
      • Specify the project collection created in the previous wizard
  • Visual Studio Ultimate 2010
    • Default Installation
